Content ratings - clear, controlled and correct

Bango puts you in control of how you rate and promote your content. You know your content better than anyone - that's why we give you the tools to self-classify your content. But it's important to get it right.

It's about providing information - accurate information - so your customers can make informed choices about what they access on their mobile phones.

Bango use three levels of content classification: U (Universal), R (Restricted) and G (General Universal). Only content that is suitable for general consumption, including children, should be given a U or G rating.

By setting a U or G-rating you are telling customers that your content is safe for minors and contains no material that people may find offensive. That means no adult content - even thumbnails - should be visible. If you can't say this about your content - give it an R-rating.

Here's a reminder of what the content ratings mean:

R rating is Restricted. It applies to adult content, as classified by the country in which you sell and promote your content. This can vary from place-to-place, so ensure you check local legal requirements.

We recommend that a warning page is displayed before R-rated content can be seen, even to age-verified users. Examples of R-rated content include sexual or violent content, photographs, videos, cartoons, written words and games.

U rating is Universal. This type of content is acceptable to all, including children and young people aged under 18. Content with this rating should not contain any profane language, sexual or violent images of any kind. This includes depictions of sexual acts or sexual violence, sadism, self-harm or any other injury of animals or people.

Other excluded material includes promotion of tobacco, alcohol or drug use, racial prejudice, gambling, dating services or un-moderated chat services.

G rating is General Universal. This rating should be applied to content that is acceptable to a universal audience in certain countries (such as the USA, Australia or Malaysia). A G-rating can be valuable as it gives more global billing options than U or R-ratings.

The G-rating is similar to a U-rating, but with slightly stricter guidelines on nudity and suggestive or violent images. For instance, the G-rating guidelines contain more detail about what is not acceptable as a glamour image.

To apply for a G-rating, log in to Management Tools then select a package. Go to the Content Management Tab, click Properties and request a USA G-rating. Complete and submit the G-rating approval form. Bango will review your content and aim to enable a G-rating within 2 working days, if your content is acceptable. Once enabled you need do nothing further. G-rated content will be available to your customers, immediately.

NOTE: The rating standards above are non-exclusive, see the knowledgebase for full details.

Remember - we don't like to take the "big brother" approach, but Bango will re-classify, or at worst block your billing service if you repeatedly and deliberately mis-label your content.

Getting it right not only ensures the integrity of your content, but also helps your customers to make valid choices about the type of content they view or listen to.

Further information and guidelines for all the content classifications above can be found when you log in to the Bango knowledgebase.
